Pharmaceutical companies sued over adverts
Published in: Legalbrief Today

Issue No: 1498

Pharmaceutical groups, including US group Procter & Gamble and Paris-listed Sanofi-Aventis, have filed a lawsuit against rivals Britain's GlaxoSmithKline and Swiss drug-maker Roche over allegations that their marketing embellishes the benefits of newly-launched osteoporosis pill Boniva.

The adverts, reports The Telegraph, have been described as ‘false and misleading’. The rival drug-makers said Boniva adverts implied the pill would help prevent non-vertebral fractures, when in fact it only protects the spine – unlike Actonel, which also reduces fractures in hip, wrist and thigh bones. Glaxo said it believed its advertising was truthful and accurate.
