Kellogg’s faces obesity suit in US
Published in: Legalbrief Today
Date: Tue 24 January 2006
Category: Media
Issue No: 1506

Kellogg’s is taking heat in SA and abroad over its television adverts promoting children’s cereals.

The Advertising Standards Authority in SA has ordered Kellogg’s cereals to withdraw its health claims in its television adverts. And now in a sequel in the US, both the cereal maker and Viacom, the media group, are being sued by parents and a consumer group seeking to stop them promoting sugary cereals on children’s’ television. The suit, reports the Financial Times, has pitted consumer activists who claim that there is a direct link between television advertising and increasing juvenile obesity rates, against food industry groups that claim there is no evidence of such a link.
