SPCA wins elephant court case
Published in: Legalbrief Environmental
Date: Tue 10 July 2007
Category: Litigation
Issue No: 0018

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has obtained a court order preventing a man from training and exhibiting elephants, the SPCA says.

A report in The Citizen says that magistrate JM Robertson refused an application under the Performing Animals Protection Act. Elizabeth property tycoon and Kwantu Private Game Reserve owner Yossuf Jeeva had applied for the permit two months ago to train five elephants, two Bengal tigers, six lions, cheetahs, African wild dogs and spotted hyenas, reports The Herald. The SPCA says the ‘ruling carries ramifications – all to the benefit of the animals themselves – in relation to the rapidly growing elephant-back safari operations in our country and other activities involving wild animals in captivity’.
