Position: Litigation Intern

Description:
The Litigation Unit at the Centre for Applied Legal Studies in the School of Law, University of the Witwatersrand is a public interest law unit functioning under the auspices of the Wits Law Clinic. The Unit specialises in Constitutional and Administrative Law, with a strong focus on human rights.
A one-year contract post for a recent LLB graduate interested in developing a constitutional and human rights legal career commencing on 15 January 2008.
1 year fixed period post. If the incumbent takes on articles with the Wits Law Clinic, the contract may be renewable for a further year dependent on performance and availability of donor funds.
The package may be structured to include a provident fund, bonus and medical aid.
Responsibilities:
* Assist the CALS attorney in all aspects of CALS’ practice, including the service and filing of documents, taking instructions from clients, basic legal research and attending and participating in consultations with Counsel.
* There may also be an opportunity to take up articles with the Wits Law Clinic or to participate in CALS research activities.
Requirements:
* LLB degree.
* Strong commitment to human rights.
* Driver’s license.
* Some fieldwork research and/or documentary research experience would be an advantage, but is not essential.
