Trump claims African highway to bear his name

Morocco has reportedly named a 1 055km road in the Western Sahara the ‘President Donald J Trump Highway,’ a move that appears to acknowledge the former US President's 2020 recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed territory. The highway, linking Dakhla and Tiznit, is a significant infrastructure project valued at approximately $1bn. News24 reports that a video shared by Trump on Truth Social showcased the extensive roadway, described as one of Africa's longest and a crucial component of a broader network connecting West Africa to the Mediterranean. Trump expressed gratitude to King Mohammed VI of Morocco for the honour. While Morocco has not officially confirmed the naming, the gesture would further solidify Trump's strong ties with the North African nation. The Western Sahara has been a point of contention since Spain's withdrawal in 1975, with Morocco largely controlling the resource-rich region. Trump's endorsement of Moroccan rule was part of a deal that also normalised relations between Morocco and Israel, subsequently encouraging significant investment in the area, including a new deep-sea port and tourism developments.
